When requesting or adding an Advanced Practice Registered Nursing license for a provider, you may wish to include prescriptive authority or autonomous registration as part of the license.
Note: Only Advanced Practice Registered Nursing (APRN) licenses are eligible for prescriptive authority and autonomous registration. NP, CNM, and PMHNP are the only licenses in the APRN category.
Definitions
Prescriptive authority (Rx auth): The legal right to prescribe medications.
Each state handles prescriptive authority differently during the license application process. You can use Medallion to apply for licenses with prescriptive authority in almost all U.S. states and territories. Each state uses one of the following three methods for granting prescriptive authority:
Included in state license: All advanced practice nursing licenses include prescriptive authority.
Separate license: Prescriptive authority requires a separate application in addition to the state license application.
Optional as part of state license (“checkbox”): Prescriptive authority is an option that can be selected during the application process. If selected, this approval is part of the same application as the state license.
Autonomous Registration (Auton Reg): The application process to obtain the ability to practice within the scope of an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse without physician supervision.
Currently, Medallion only supports autonomous registration applications in a few states. For updated information on which states are supported, consult the table below.
For all supported states, a separate license application is required.
Advanced Practice Registered Nursing (APRN) licenses: Medallion considers NP, CNM, and PMHNP licenses as eligible for prescriptive authority and/or autonomous registration.
